HeinzelCheeseTalk no 20: Poland. This time for real… Friday Nov 20, 6pm

After all the wonderful excitement of Cheese Berlin, here comes a „regular“ HeinzelCheeseTalk at „our“ table opposite the Suff winestall at Markthalle Neun. On that table: three totally not regular, exceptional Polish cheeses, from distant, verdant Mazuria in the far east of the country. I know, I know – I promised you those three beauties back in October, and then didn’t deliver… This time, they are here, for real. And some intriguing Polish wines to go with them. So hopefully, around that table, a very excited crowd of HeinzelCheese folks! » Weiterlesen…

Cheese of the month November 2015: Évora from the Alentejo/Portugal

The wild and wide Alentejo in southern central Portugal is exactly what you need when November finally settles on our shores with its chilly darkness, and shelves begin to be invaded way too soon and aggressively by gingerbread and chocolate Santas. The small sheep cheeses from Évora evoke the light and the aromas of  the austere, sun drenched garrigue pastures roamed by the shepherds and their animals. » Weiterlesen…

Cheese Berlin 2015! November 1st!! With Lots of Specials…

What a weekend – the Markthalle Neun was full of cheese, cheese makers, cheesemongers, cheese lovers – in short, you! For a whole, long day (11-19h), local, regional, national, international stuff was presented, sniffed, felt, tasted, discussed, sold, savored…

This fourth edition of Cheese Berlin was a very special happening – which Heinzelcheese celebrated with four (!) very special Heinzelcheesetalks.

Käse des Monats Oktober 2015: Isländischer Skyr

Skyr fasziniert mich seit langem. » Weiterlesen…

Cheese of the month October 2015: Icelandic Skyr

Skyr has long fascinated me. However, Iceland not being exactly around the corner and not in the just-hop-over-to-find-out flight ticket, it took me a long time to figure it out for good. The final reckoning took me by surprise and happened a few weeks ago at the Slow Food Cheese in Bra/Piemont on a Sunday morning… and what I tasted made me almost jump with joy: it was quark! » Weiterlesen…

HeinzelCheeseTalk no 19: Poland and Greece in form of cheese and wine. Friday, Oct 9, 2015

Poland and Greece – what do those have in common, you’re probably wondering. Well, nothing in particular except for the fact that I’m first traveling up north and east, and then going down south – before coming straight to you to our table at the Markthalle Neun, loaded with goodies. As usual I can’t predict what I’ll find to taste, explore and enjoy together. But I’m going to Mazury and down the Vistula river, to Athens, Thessaloniki and Macedonia… » Weiterlesen…

HeinzelCheeseTalk no 18: We went Italian. And Drunk. Friday, September 25, 2015

Heinzelcheese takes German and Austrian mountain cheese as well as a selection Rhine Riesling down to the Slow Food Cheese fair in Bra/Piemont, and promises to return with the finest, most unusual cheesy stuff, just for you. Sounds good? Will be good. We’ll discuss why there are two different words for cheese in Italian, formaggio and cacio, how a cheese gets drunk (no, not in your stomach, way before!), and much more I don’t know about yet. » Weiterlesen…

HeinzelCheeseTalk no 17: Blomeyer meets Stahl – September 4, 2015

Heinzelcheese was very proud and honored to have two giants at her side this time: Fritz Lloyd Blomeyer, Berlin cheesemonger 2.0, and Christian Stahl, self-styled winegrower who has been sowing the seeds of disruptive creativity in his home region of Franken ever since he started making wine in the family farm’s former pigstall in Auernhofen. Fritz brought his most exciting and unusual wares, Christian poured… those guys know how to jam it! » Weiterlesen…

Rheingau Riesling from JB Becker and Spicherhalde mountain cheese

It was summer, it was hot, the view was fantastic – I finally managed to spend a few days in the Allgäu, Bavaria’s cheese lands bordering on western Austria, and climb up to Alpe Spicherhalde, one of the best alpine dairies around. Well, I admit, it’s not that much of a climb, as the dairy is at 1478m and the ascent starts in the small mountain village of Balderschwang, at 1044m… But still, it felt more than ok to order some bread and cheese when I arrived. » Weiterlesen…

Cheese of the month August 2015: Pyrénées Brebis from the Pays Basque and Béarn/F

The height of summer in Heinzelcheese country calls out for something on the cheese plate that transports me to lush mountain pastures, to the symphony of bells, little streams, the wind swishing, animals munching… That’s why this month’s cheese comes from the Pyrenees. Or, to be more exact, their French-Atlantic side which divides up into the Basque country (bordering the sea) and the Béarn (inland). » Weiterlesen…
