Cheese Berlin 2017 – a tired but very happy look back at this wonderful November weekend

We were Cheese! Somewhat exhausted, but soo happy we cherish the memories of that wonderful weekend. We had planned, organized, dreamed, hoped – and you came. Shepherds, farmers and cheesemakers from Brandenburg to Toggenburg and Anatolia, cheesemongers and affineurs from Berlin to Antwerpen and London, and just as important: tasters, aficionados, and all those interested in cheese from far and wide. » Weiterlesen…

Terroir Symposium 2017 in Toronto: Celebrating Canadian Gastronomy – and Riesling!

It’s been ten years since Torontonian Arlene Stein started the Terroir Symposium in her native city. About one year ago, Arlene moved to Berlin, and we met, and she invited me to speak at this year’s event (of which she also created a more intimate satellite version in Berlin in mid-May, but that’s a different story). Me being travel-insatiable me took this as a wonderful excuse to be on the road for a whole month, going to New York, Cambridge, upper Vermont, Québec, Nova Scotia, and, extensively, Ontario. For wine, for cheese, for friends, for…life as such!

Slow Cheese in Bodrum/Turkey! March 2-5, 2017

Super excited about an upcoming trip to Bodrum on the Turkish coast, where the local Slow Food group has teamed up with many others to stage the second Slow Cheese. Against all odds, in spite of everything. Whoever has been following me for a while knows that I am a huge fan of Turkey’s traditional cheeses. » Weiterlesen…

The fifth Cheese Berlin: November 5th/6th 2016

On the first November weekend the Markthalle was all about cheese, cheese that is deeply rooted in its whereabouts, cheese from the immediate surroundings of Berlin, from other regions in Germany, from Europe, the world.

For this fifth edition our theme was the cheese of the north; from Mazuria to Mecklenburg, Schleswig-Holstein to Scandinavia. But of course Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Romania, Ireland and the UK were represented too. » Weiterlesen…

Heinzelcheesetalk #29: Some of my favorite US American cheeses. Friday, August 12, 2016

When I wrote the invite for this cheesetalk I had been sitting in Cambridge MA, and those of you familiar with the ongoings in Heinzelcheese land, or just generally knowledgeable in cheesy matters, knew where I would go to get my cheese: Ihsan Gurdal’s Formaggio Kitchen is a real paradise. During my five weeks in the US I had met so many fantastic people, tasted such great cheeses and wonderful wines, that I wanted to share at least of few of them with you. For instance David Gremmels‘ excellent blue cheeses from the Rogue River valley in southern Oregon. Or the Cowgirls‘ fantastic soft cheeses from Marin County, one hour drive north of San Francisco, right on the Pacific. And so much more… » Weiterlesen…

Heinzelcheese at Riesling Rendezvous in Seattle: July 17-19, 2016

Three days full of Riesling – in the glass, meeting producers, mingle with somms and journos? Yes!! In beautiful Seattle, organized by Chateau Ste Michelle and the Dr Loosen crew? Double yes! But it gets even better: we brought back the immensely popular off-dry Riesling & Smoked Salmon tasting AND I personally presented some cheese.

So whoever happens to be around and in reach, come and meet us on Friday, July 22nd, between 6.30 and 7.30pm at 3885a Cesar Chavez Street. » Weiterlesen…

HeinzelCheeseTalk Special: Greece – Tuesday (!), May 3rd, 2016

In May, the Heinzelcheese network resulted in something very special: handcrafted cheeses from the Cyclades. Complete withe local experts! And, of course, Greek wines, from one of the super stars, Stellios Boutaris of Kir-Yianni. Who, unfortunately, could not be present, but the wonderful Aglaia Kremezi and her husband Costas Moraitis came and told us about the island of Kea, the gorgeous cooking school they run there during the summer, and the stories of the cheeses they brought for us. » Weiterlesen…

HeinzelCheeseTalk no 21: Goat, Sheep, Buffalo and Cow – let’s compare. Friday, January 8th, 2016, 6pm

We might occasionally act sheepish, and sometimes we are real cowards… but can we really taste the difference between different kinds of milk? Dear HeinzelCheeseTalk family (yes, you are my family, and my bestest wishes to you all for this new year – hope you had some more than decent cheese to start with and a good drop with that!) – it was a pleasure to look at some basics with you. » Weiterlesen…

HeinzelCheeseTalk RAWfair Special: Natural Wine meets Natural Cheese. Friday November 27, 6pm

We were very excited and very honored: The fabulous „crazyfrenchwoman“ Isabelle Légéron (MW!) took her RAWfair of natural wines and vignérons to Berlin, to Markthalle Neun (where else?!)! Obviously, we had to live up to the occasion, here on the eastern outskirts of the continent… » Weiterlesen…
