On my first research trip to Poland in August 2014, in an organic grocery store in Warsaw, I came across cheeses made by Bożena and Daniel Sokołowscy. They keep around a hundred goats on their organic farm Kozia Łąka Sery Łomnickie not far south from Jelenia Góra in Lower Silesia, overlooking the Giant Mountains with the Schneekoppe peak.

After all the wonderful excitement of Cheese Berlin, here comes a „regular“ HeinzelCheeseTalk at „our“ table opposite the Suff winestall at Markthalle Neun. On that table: three totally not regular, exceptional Polish cheeses, from distant, verdant Mazuria in the far east of the country. I know, I know – I promised you those three beauties back in October, and then didn’t deliver… This time, they are here, for real. And some intriguing Polish wines to go with them. A blue cheese, yet again. Not because I’m feeling blue (the opposite!), but because this cheese is fascinating, delicious, full of character – and makes me want to jump on a train immediately and travel to its origin! Which is: Mazuria, in the northeast of Poland. Sylwia Szlandrowicz and Ruslan Kozynko live amongst the rolling verdant hills on which their sheep graze. After Greece, Turkey and the Allgäu I recently went to Poland to find out about the food scene there. Finally! I mean, I grew up and live in Berlin, an hour from the Polish border!
