The cheese of the month for July 2021 is: L’Estaing from the Bergers du Larzac from the south of France

To take matters in hand oneself, make your own destiny, live and work in a self-determined way… sounds good, no? Actually, it isn’t so easy to pull off, and it comes with its own risks. This semisoft sheep’s milk cheese from the Aveyron region in the south of France is the result of such a courageous step. In April 1996, six sheep farmers decided to stop selling their milk to the large Roquefort producers at their fixed prices and instead start to make and sell cheese themselves. » Weiterlesen…

The cheese of the month for July 2020 is: Lausitzer from Hof Schafgarbe in Ogrosen/Brandenburg

A small white wheel of a cheese, two fingers high. Rindless, with just a few dots on the surface, left from the moulds the curd drained in. There is nothing fancy about the Lausitzer, which also comes in a version with fresh ramps. Like feta cheese it matures in brine for up to a year, and the salt does dominate the taste in the first moment, until the rich flavour of the sheep’s milk takes over and balances it. I really like this unpretentious little thing: on a cheese board, on its own, but also with tomatoes and in any kind of salad (water melon!) and vegetable dishes. However, and just as important, its beauty also lies in being part of a whole: I equally enjoy buying meat and sausages from Hof Schafgarbe. » Weiterlesen…

The cheese of the month for December 2019 is: Calabrian Pecorino, from Borough Market in London.

Since quite some time London has been a constant fixture of the Heinzelcheese universe, and my cheese steps almost automatically lead me in direction of Neal’s Yard Dairy and their wonderful store on Park Street at Borough Market whenever I’m over in England. But this time I never even made it to Neal’s Yard Dairy because suddenly I found myself in front of a small paradise, like a small child before a Christmas tree. » Weiterlesen…

The cheese of the month for August 2019 is: Erzincan Tulum Peynir from the Gün family in Anatolia

Erzincan Tulum Peynir, the sheep milk cheese from the mountains in northeast Anatolia – after my visits there in July of last year and this April this translates into so many wonderful pictures, so many impressions and thoughts. The landscape of mountain plateaus rising high above the Karasu valley, the black river that is called Euphrates further south. Animals and people living in an impressive symbiosis. » Weiterlesen…

Cheese of the month September 2018: Cam-mäh from Hof Solterbeck, Owschlag/Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Everybody in food is talking about the north and nordic, and cheese wise as well there is a lot going on. It was high time to embark on two intense days of re-research with my companion in cheese, Theresa Malec. We toured the baltic east of the state of Schleswig-Holstein from Lübeck up to Flensburg, just south of the Danish border, and encountered many beautiful cheeses (and quark!) that would all deserve to be included in this series (you can read more about them here, in German). So much excellent milk (from cows, sheep and goats), and so many people treating it with great care! » Weiterlesen…

Cheese of the month September 2015: Brački Ovčji Sir, sheep’s milk cheese from the Croatian island Brač

Once again the continually growing Heinzelcheese network provided the cheese of the month, from cheese shores far away I have never been to (and now want to visit urgently, better sooner than later…). My friend Paula returned from a family trip to Croatia with a wheel of cheese that spoke of sheep in a stony karst landscape, with macchia shrubs instead of lush pastures; the whole setting surrounded by the blue Adriatic sea. Brač is the third largest islands off the Croatian coast. » Weiterlesen…
