5.5.13 in Berlin: Wine meets Cheese at Markthalle Neun

After the Berlin Slow Food Cheese on a Sunday last November showed the enormous interest in the subject, Markthalle Neun on May 5 from 12 to 7pm was dedicated to „Wine meets Cheese“ – hooray!

markthalle_weinkäse_vornThe Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg’s Wrangelkiez right now is the place in Berlin  I find most inspiring. I don’t mean only in terms of food: just as on a successfull evening, food and drink here act as the basis for human encounters. Since the beginning of the year, Nikolaus Driessen, Bernd Maier and Florian Niedermeier are running the historic market (which fortunately has been carefully preserved rather than restaured to death). Together with many others they nurture this unique place to enable the undreamt-of, which often has been floating in the air and waiting for just such a point of cristallization. So on May 5 wines from the Suff winestore’s team of winegrowers (such as J.B. Becker/Rheingau, Rainer Schnaitmann/Württemberg, Château du Cèdre/Cahors, to name only a few) met with cheeses from Berlin cheesemongers (Knippenbergs! Fritz Blomeyer!) and regional producers (Ziegenhof Ogrosen! Capriolenhof!). Glass in hand, we explored… I did a taste lab for those interested in getting to know a bit more about the mysterious, endlessly fascinating interplay of the two protagonists. We sat down in a small group for about an hour with a selection of dry Riesling wines and Bergkäse, mountain cheese, to discover how the Riesling fruit and acidity helps along the cheeses‘ aromas. It was a great tasting trip – thanks to all my enthusiastic fellow explorers – see you next time!
